What you need
- The pages, as a PDF, PNG or JPEG. Up to five files, 5 MB each, and 20 pages in one fax.
- The recipient fax number in international form, for example +1 followed by ten digits in the US and Canada.
- A faxB2B account. Use an up-to-date browser such as Safari; there is also a mobile fax app on the App Store if you prefer one.
1. Scan the paper, do not photograph it
Open the Files app, tap the three dots and choose Scan Documents (Notes can also scan documents). Hold the phone flat over the page in even light. The scanner straightens the edges and gives you a multi-page PDF, which is easier to read than a photo taken at an angle. See the Apple Files instructions for your iOS version.
2. Upload in the browser
Sign in, choose Send fax and tap the file field. Use the file picker to find the PDF scan you just saved; available options depend on your iOS version. Several files are merged in the order you add them, so add the cover sheet or the first page first.
3. Check the pages on the small screen
faxB2B shows every page before anything is dialled. Rotate a sideways page, drag pages into the right order and drop the ones you do not need. This is worth doing on a phone, where a stray page is easy to miss.
4. Enter the number and send
Type the number with its country code. After you confirm, the fax moves through queued, sending and then delivered or failed, and the page updates itself while you watch. A busy line or an unanswered call is redialled automatically.
What usually goes wrong
- A photo instead of a scan. Pages are printed in black and white, so a shadow across the page turns into a black band. Use the scanner.
- An unsupported photo format. faxB2B takes PDF, PNG and JPEG only. A scan saved from Files is always a PDF, which avoids the question.
- A file over 5 MB. Scan in black and white, or run the file through our PDF compressor first.
