resend a fax
without confusing the recipient.

Resending is easy. Making sure the recipient ends up with one correct document instead of two conflicting ones takes a little more thought.

Retry, or start again?

Retry the failed fax when the document is right and only the call went wrong. Open the fax under Sent and choose Retry; the new fax is linked to the original, so the history stays in one place.

Prepare a new fax when anything about the document or the number has changed. A retry is meant to repeat the same send, and if the pages were edited after the fax was reviewed it will stop rather than send something you have not seen.

Wait for the automatic attempts first

A busy line or an unanswered call is already being redialled — up to three calls in total by default, with pauses of two and five minutes before the retries. Sending again on top of that puts two copies of your fax in the queue for one line, which makes both slower and can deliver the document twice. Check the attempt list before you act.

Label the resend

  1. Put "resent" and the original date in the cover sheet subject.
  2. Say what it replaces: the whole fax, or specific pages.
  3. Repeat the page count, cover sheet included.
  4. If only a few pages changed, send only those and say so — a full resend invites the recipient to work from whichever stack is nearest.

If the first fax was delivered and wrong

You cannot recall a fax; the pages are already at the other end. Send a short correction with its own cover sheet stating plainly that it supersedes the earlier one, and telephone the recipient if the mistake matters. Delivered means the machine confirmed the transmission, so assume a human may already have the old version in hand.

Keep the record tidy

Leave failed faxes in place rather than treating them as clutter: with the retry linked to the original, the record shows what was attempted, when, and why it failed. Sent faxes can be exported, and sensitive actions are in the audit log, so an owner can review what happened while those records remain within the retention period.

Questions

Does a retry cost pages again?
The retry is a new send, so the pages it transmits are counted. Pages from the failed call that went nowhere are not.
Can I retry to a different number?
Prepare a new fax instead. A retry repeats the same recipient.
How many times should I try?
After the automatic attempts plus one manual send, stop and telephone the recipient. Ask the recipient to check their equipment and number before spending more time on further attempts.
